Choosing a 3-Cushion Carom Cue: Tip, Taper and Weight
Three-cushion demands more control from a cue than any other discipline. How tip diameter, taper, weight and deflection shape carom play.
Three-cushion asks more of a cue than any other discipline. There are no pockets: every shot depends on the cue ball travelling off cushions to find two reds — which means using english on nearly every stroke, and that puts deflection at the centre of equipment choice.
Why Deflection Matters Most in Carom
Off-centre contact sends the cue ball slightly off the line the cue points at. In pool, distances are short and that error is often tolerable. In carom the ball travels around three cushions, so a small initial angle error lands the ball far from target by the third rail. This is why carom players adopted low-deflection equipment earlier than pool players — geometry, not fashion.
Tip Diameter: 11.5–12.0 mm
A thinner tip gives a smaller contact patch and transfers english more sharply and predictably, at the cost of a smaller margin for error. Pool diameters of 12.5 mm and above feel thick in carom and soften english transfer.
Taper: Control or Power
- Control-oriented (hybrid): thickens slowly from the tip, softer and more informative — favoured for carom's delicate positions.
- Linear: sharper, firmer, high power transfer.
- Conical: firmest and most powerful — ideal for pool breaks, too stiff for most carom players.

Weight, Balance and Length
Carom cues tend to be slightly lighter than pool cues, since fine control matters more than raw power. A rearward balance feels nimbler on long-rail positions. The carom table is larger (2.84 m), so players who often stretch may order the butt 3–5 cm longer than the standard 140–145 cm.
Carbon or Wood?
Carbon adoption is highest in carom, for the deflection reason above and one more: carom tournaments are played across climates and venues, and a shaft that does not move with humidity does not disturb your preparation. See our carbon vs wood comparison.
Carom Recipe
- Tip: 11.5–12.0 mm
- Taper: control-oriented (linear if you hit firmly)
- Weight: close to your habit, usually lighter than pool
- Length: 140–145 cm, +3–5 cm for frequent long positions
- Material: carbon if low deflection is your priority
