Billiard Cue Selection: Beginner to Advanced Guide

How to choose the right cue by length, weight, tip size and shaft type?

The right cue increases both comfort and your score. In this guide we summarize the main criteria.

Length

Standard adult cues are around 57–58 inches. Shorter or longer models are available depending on your height. Decide by testing according to your stroke style and distance to the table.

Weight

Most cues are in the 18–21 oz range. Lighter cues are preferred for fast play; heavier ones give more power and stability. Masi Carbon series offer different weight options.

Tip Size

For pool, 11–13 mm is common; snooker uses finer tips. Fine tips allow precise shots; thicker tips offer durability and easy control.

Shaft: One-piece vs break-down

One-piece cues transmit vibration better; two-piece (break-down) models are practical for transport and storage. Carbon fiber shafts offer both durability and consistent performance.
